  • It does not occur often that I like studies where two black pawns are ready for promotion, and one of them even with check. This takes away a bit from the aesthetics of the initial position. (Steffen Nielsen has written on this topic on the blog.) Here, however, I am convinced by the mix of typical Minski elements: the battery on the back rank, the strong black counterplay with a truly paradoxical response (5… Rd3+! 6. Ka2!!), and finally, a simple, but original and spectacular queen sacrifice. What else, by the way? It is a Minski after all. (3 points)

  • By the way, I would have omitted the first move (1. Qd5 Rd8) and have started with 2. Rd6. Perhaps even BTM with 1…Rd8. Refuting 1. Qg4 is a very computer-intensive activity with many long lines that also branch out quite a bit. For example, in the 10. Kc5 line Black cannot capture the bishop after 12…h1Q+ 13. Kc7 Qxh4 because 14. Qd5+ would win after all (Qe5+ Qe8+ Qf7+ Qh7+ etc.). So Black needs to defend with a quiet move—13… Qf1!!, 13…Qf3!! or 13…Qa8!!—but it is far from obvious that the resulting positions are drawn. 14. Qd6 seems to keep everything together and to win, for example. In earlier times, before modern engines, some people might have thought the study to be unsound. True, in my suggested version it is not nice that the queen is attacked or that Black has the move, but personally I find the analytics too annoying.
