{The following study is one of the best examples of my cooperation with Martin.
It is based on one of his ideas. My contribution was to double the theme. The
diagram position is pleasant and very game like. Despite being two pawns up
would you not as White be more than happy with a draw? Black has a strong
attack!} 1. Bf1 (1. Qxa4 $4 Qf3# {is out of the question. White must defend the
weak White diagonal by all means.}) 1... Nf4 $1 (1... Bc6 2. Bg2 {and White is
in full control. The advanced pawn will force the win.}) 2. Bg2 {Now Black has
two attacking options, but based on his wish to deflect Bg2.} Qe2 {The natural
move, threatening direct mate.} ({The alternative sacrifices the queen right
away} 2... Qh3 $3 {The move tries to deflect the bishop from the c6-h1 diagonal
allowing mate by the bishop waiting on a4. The refutation shows the theme for
the first time} 3. Qd5 $3 {Blocking the diagonal in advance. Thus a quiet queen
sac is met by a defensive counter sac, blocking the mating line} (3. Bxh3 $4
Bc6+ 4. Bg2 Bxg2# {model mate}) (3. Bb7 $4 {This escape is not possible due to}
Ne2 {/Nh5 and we see another virtue of the Queen on h3. It pins pawn-h2.} 4.
Qxa4 Ng3# {model pin mate}) 3... exd5 4. Bxh3 Nxh3 5. b7 $18) (2... Qe8 {is too
passive and White wins after} 3. Qa3 Nxg2 4. Qg3+) {After the mainline move
White must rescue his bishop along the diagonal. This proves not at all easy, as
most squares are mined.} 3. Bb7 $1 ({Not} 3. Ba8 $4 {and the diagonal indeed
proves too short.} Qa6 $1 4. Be4 Bc6 $1 {the only move to rescues Black, but now
he is totally winning.} 5. Qxa6 (5. Bxc6 Qxa2 $19) 5... Bxe4#) 3... Qa6 $3 {A
perfect echo of the other mainline. The constellation a6-b7 mirrors h3-g2 in the
other corner of the board. And again the diagonal has no safe square.} 4. Qd5 $3
{But again the counter queen sac rescues White, as Bc6 is prevented. This time,
however, there is no obvious win in sight.} (4. Bxa6 $4 Bc6+ 5. Qd5 Bxd5#) 4...
Nxd5 (4... exd5 5. Bxa6 {wins easily.}) 5. Bxa6 {This bishop began its journey
on a6 and has now completed the round trip a6-f1-g2-b7-a6.} Bc6 {Black still has
some serious threats. Now both mate and a discovered check winning bishop a6 is
in the air.} 6. Bb5 $1 (6. Bxd4 $2 Nc7+ {/Nb4+} 7. Kg1 Nxa6 $11) 6... Bb7 (6...
Bxb5 7. b7 $18) {But what now? How can white possibly keep his piece?} 7. Bxd4
$1 Nc7+ {or Nc3+ with the same play.} 8. Kg1 Nxb5 9. Bc5 $1 $18 {The black
knight is suddenly dominated. Black has no defense against 10. c4 winning it,
leaving White with 3 extra pawns.} 1-0
