PIECE TECHNICAL — A piece or Pawn, which is not needed for the expression of composer’s idea but is needed to eliminate defects such as cooks, duals etc. (Encyclopedia of Chess Problems 2012)
The Pg4 is an example of a technical pawn. It is not needed for the mate, it makes the study correct — that’s what technical pieces do.

It is impossible to reject a fact that pawn g4 is the technical one («is no longer that technical»). But (sometimes) it can play a cool role like here. Probably authors skipped (missed) this interesting possibility: 1… g1Q 2. Rc1+ Kf2 3. Rxg1 Kxg1 4. Bxg4! (4. e8Q? g3 5. Bg6 g2! 6. Bxf5 Kf2! =). Such a subtle nuance can increase quality of work.
In the variant [1…g1Q … 4. Bxg4! +- (4. e8Q? g3 =)] and the pawn g4 is no longer that technical.
