The idea is definitely prizeworthy, and the black counterplay is great! However, the introduction is too messy for my taste, and unrelated to the main artistic content of the scheme. Why not start with 9. Dd1-g1+, perhaps even without the move pair Ng6 Qxg6?

I would also like to bring the bishop to g3. Such a nail in the coffin should be hammered in during the play. Perhaps like in 8/k7/P3P1qP/8/1p2p2b/1P1p1P2/5pP1/1R1Q3K w — — 6 1 (1. Qd1-c1 f1=Q+ 2. Qxf1 Bh4-g3 3. Qg1+ Ka8 4. Qc5!! Qg6xh6+ 5. Kg1 etc.) but I fear that Steffen will not like the black pawn on f2. This is just an idea: I am sure that a better version along these lines can be found.

I know it should ideally have been 3. Qc5! or 4. Qc5! and not 11. Qc5! I worked for years on the introduction, but in the end I got caught up in this packed version, the very type I warn against in my own 50 JT award…

The most time I spent trying to make the rook move d1-b1 work in the intro instead of d1-a1, to allow room for the queen on a1 in the end. Wouldn’t that have been a cool logical try??! But I couldn’t make it work.

I consider Qg1-c5 among my top five ideas. I had also a version with a White knight on h8 where 1. Qg1-a7 (instead of 1. Qg1-d4) was the correct exit.

At some point during my work with this study I forgot that is was infact inspired by a game, but I was reminded when posting it on X! Amazing game.
